Most scholars today identify Bartholomew as Nathanael, who appears in the Gospel of John&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Due to the nature of his martyrdom, Bartholomew is the patron saint of tanners, plasterers, tailors, leather workers, bookbinders, farmers, housepainters, butchers, and glove makers.&nbsp;In works of art the saint has been depicted being skinned by tanners, as in Guido da Siena&#8217;s reliquary shutters with the <i id=\"mwAXI\">Martyrdoms of St. Francis, St. Claire, St. Bartholomew, and St. Catherine of Alexandria<\/i>.&nbsp;Popular in Florence and other areas in Tuscany, the saint also came to be associated with salt, oil, and cheese merchants.&nbsp; [\u00a9 Wikipedia]<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"ve1\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><em>Almighty and everlasting God,&nbsp;<\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #008000;\"><em>who gave to your apostle Bartholomew grace truly to believe and to preach your word:&nbsp;<\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #008000;\"><em>grant that your Church&nbsp;may love that word which he believed<\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #008000;\"><em>and may faithfully preach and receive the same;<\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #008000;\"><em>through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,<\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #008000;\"><em>who is alive and reigns with you,&nbsp;<\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #008000;\"><em>in the unity of the Holy Spirit,&nbsp;<\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #008000;\"><em>one God, now and for ever.<\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #008000;\"><em>AMEN<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Today marks our patronal festival of St Bartholomew.
