{"id":30211,"date":"2026-03-01T17:41:15","date_gmt":"2026-03-01T17:41:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ducklingtonchurch.org.uk\/?post_type=ctc_sermon&#038;p=30211"},"modified":"2026-03-03T17:51:26","modified_gmt":"2026-03-03T17:51:26","slug":"we-are-signposts-to-the-destination","status":"publish","type":"ctc_sermon","link":"https:\/\/www.ducklingtonchurch.org.uk\/?ctc_sermon=we-are-signposts-to-the-destination","title":{"rendered":"We are signposts to the destination"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Reading&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Matthew 3 &#8211; NIV<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>In those days John the Baptist&nbsp;came, preaching in the wilderness of Judea and saying, \u201cRepent, for the kingdom of heaven&nbsp;has come near.\u201d<strong><sup>&nbsp;<\/sup><\/strong>This is he who was spoken of through the prophet Isaiah:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA voice of one calling in the wilderness, \u2018Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him.\u2019\u201d<sup>[<\/sup><\/p>\n<p><strong><sup>&nbsp;<\/sup><\/strong>John\u2019s&nbsp;clothes were made of camel\u2019s hair, and he had a leather belt around his waist.&nbsp;His food was locusts&nbsp;and wild honey.&nbsp;<strong><sup>&nbsp;<\/sup><\/strong>People went out to him from Jerusalem and all Judea and the whole region of the Jordan.<strong><sup>&nbsp;<\/sup><\/strong>Confessing their sins, they were baptized&nbsp;by him in the Jordan River.<\/p>\n<p><strong><sup>&nbsp;<\/sup><\/strong>But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to where he was baptizing, he said to them: \u201cYou brood of vipers!&nbsp;Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?&nbsp;<strong><sup>&nbsp;<\/sup><\/strong>Produce fruit in keeping with repentance And do not think you can say to yourselves, \u2018We have Abraham as our father.\u2019&nbsp;I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham.<strong><sup>&nbsp;<\/sup><\/strong>The axe is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.<\/p>\n<p><strong><sup>&nbsp;<\/sup><\/strong>\u201cI baptize you with<sup>[<\/sup><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Matthew%203&amp;version=NIV#fen-NIV-23204b\"><sup>b<\/sup><\/a><sup>]<\/sup>&nbsp;water for repentance.&nbsp;But after me comes one who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with<sup>[<\/sup><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Matthew%203&amp;version=NIV#fen-NIV-23204c\"><sup>c<\/sup><\/a><sup>]<\/sup>&nbsp;the Holy Spirit&nbsp;and fire.&nbsp;<strong><sup>&nbsp;<\/sup><\/strong>His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor, gathering his wheat into the barn and burning up the chaff with unquenchable fire.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong><sup>&nbsp;<\/sup><\/strong>Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John.<strong><sup>&nbsp;<\/sup><\/strong>But John tried to deter him, saying, \u201cI need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong><sup>&nbsp;<\/sup><\/strong>Jesus replied,&nbsp;\u201cLet it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness.\u201d&nbsp;Then John consented.<strong><sup>&nbsp;<\/sup><\/strong>As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water.
