The Bishop of Dorchester founded the Fellowship, with the support of the Rector of Dorchester Abbey, as a modest way in which we can honour the people who have given exceptional service in some way or other to their church and community over a number of years.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Over the years, a number of the congregation of St Bartholomew&#8217;s have been honoured for their exceptional service.&nbsp; received certificates from Bishop Colin in recognition of their outstanding service to the church and local community over many years.&nbsp; Their induction in to the <em><strong>Order of St Birinus<\/strong><\/em>&nbsp; took place at Dorchester Abbey on 17<sup>th<\/sup> July 2011.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>St Birinus was the first Bishop of Dorchester from the year 634 to 649 A.D<br \/>\nBirinus, a <a class=\"external\" title=\"Franks\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Franks\" rel=\"nofollow\">Frank<\/a>, came to the kingdoms of <a class=\"external\" title=\"Wessex\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wessex\" rel=\"nofollow\">Wessex<\/a> in 634, landing at the port of \u201cHamwic\u201d, now in the <a class=\"external\" title=\"St Mary's, Southampton\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/St_Mary%27s,_Southampton\" rel=\"nofollow\">St. Mary\u2019s<\/a> area of <a class=\"external\" title=\"Southampton\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Southampton\" rel=\"nofollow\">Southampton<\/a>.<br \/>\nBirinus had been made bishop by Asterius in <a class=\"external\" title=\"Genoa\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Genoa\" rel=\"nofollow\">Genoa<\/a>, and <a class=\"external\" title=\"Pope Honorius I\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pope_Honorius_I\" rel=\"nofollow\">Pope Honorius I<\/a> created the commission to convert the West Saxons. In 635, he persuaded the West Saxon king <a class=\"external\" title=\"Cynegils\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cynegils\" rel=\"nofollow\">Cynegils<\/a> to allow him to preach. He gave Birinus <a class=\"external\" title=\"Dorchester-on-Thames\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dorchester-on-Thames\" rel=\"nofollow\">Dorchester-on-Thames<\/a> for his episcopal See.
