A caterpillar spends its time consuming the leaf on which it was born.  It has no idea that it will one day become a butterfly. The transformation involves a kind of death to everything it has known, emerging into a very different (and more beautiful) kind of existence.  Each stage of our spiritual growth involves giving up what we are familiar with to be born to new life.  We might borrow from the psychologist Robert Kegan who writes about human development as being for those who don’t want to die as a caterpillar.
Paul in Philippians uses the word epektasis to express his experience of spiritual growth “stretching forward for what lies ahead” (Phil 3:13).  It conveys the idea of progress or ongoing growth.
Chrysalis at St Bartholomew’s offers a variety of events to help us develop the spiritual practices that nurture our faith, conversations around the different scenes in the drama of the Eucharist, and opportunities to explore the Scriptures together.
