Well, what an unusual summer it has been. With an exceptional amount of sunshine and temperatures we would have only dreamt of a few decades ago. Autumn for many people is a glorious time with late summer holidays, and lower numbers now that the crowds have dispersed. This year we are seeing an unusual richness of autumn colours here in the UK, reminiscent of the eastern seaboard of the USA known for spectacular falls, as the warm air from the south meets the cooler air from the north.
Autumn is also a time of change. With over 400,000 young people entering higher education. For many, if not all, it will be a big step into the future and the next phase of life. For most it will be stepping out into the unknown, but with faith in their futures and the knowledge that countless generations have gone before them.
Locally we also have much to look forward to with the apple pressing extravagance on Sunday 12th October, a tractor fest and the run up to Christmas. Many of the celebrations that follow will look forward to the future with faith, as we prepare for the big day and remember Jesus’ humble entry into our world.
We have also seen the theme of looking forward to the future with faith, reflected in the autumn Sunday morning readings. One particular incident occurs in Luke’s Gospel when Jesus is asked how many times must I forgive my brother. His disciples receive a sobering message, if your brother offers repentance, the number is unlimited. Not easy when the hurt has run very deep for many years, and is difficult to come to terms with.
Jesus’ early disciples likewise find his teaching hard to swallow and respond with the words, please Lord increase our faith. A cry that has been echoed by countless generations down the ages. Fortunately, from the Old Testament to the New Testament, we have many examples of faith in action from people like Noah, Abraham, Isaac, King David and the Apostle Paul. All are shining examples of faith. As we look to the future locally and the coming new year, if you are interested in increasing your faith or even exploring the Christian faith deeper, do please talk to Andrea or the ministry team, and we will be delighted to respond.Roy Tarbox LLM
