Safeguarding – A statement from Andrea

Safeguarding Sunday 17 November 2024

As we gather on this Safeguarding Sunday, we take a moment to acknowledge a difficult but vital responsibility we hold as a community and church, the protection of each person, especially the vulnerable, in our midst.

As I am sure you will know, the Archbishop Justin Welby announced his resignation this week. Taking personal responsibility for his failings and the systematic failings of the Church of England. A step he hopes will allow for renewed healing and trust-building within the church. His decision is part of a broader response to deeply troubling issues that have come to light.

One of these issues, documented in what is now known as the ‘Makin Report’, highlights the harrowing abuse inflicted by John Smyth. This report details the suffering that Smyth inflicted upon children and young men, acts that represent a profound betrayal of trust and care. It is both shocking and heart breaking, reminding us of the church’s profound responsibility to ensure that our spaces are safe and that abuse is neither tolerated nor ignored.

On this Safeguarding Sunday, we pray for those who have been harmed, for their healing and recovery, and we renew our commitment to creating a culture that protect and safeguard all who seek refuge and support within our community. Let us remain vigilant, compassionate, and committed to a future where such atrocities are never repeated.
