From the CofE and Oxford Dicoese: Historical adoption practices – apology issued

This message includes references to historical adoption practices, including the separation of mothers and babies, stigma, and experiences of trauma and lasting emotional harm.

Today the Church of England has issued an apology to those harmed through homes and adoptions connected to the Church.

We have also issued our own apology to those harmed through homes and adoptions connected to the Diocese of Oxford.

We recognise that some women, children and families were denied dignity, choice and the opportunity to remain together. Where the Diocese was involved, or failed to challenge practices that caused harm, we are deeply sorry.

Words cannot undo the pain experienced by those affected, but we want to listen, learn and support those seeking information, understanding or acknowledgement of their experiences.
